La coronación de la reina de Inglaterra, en junio de 1953.It was in May 1948 that Walton Sound and Film Services was formed by James Beney,
a chap who had moved into the mobile cinema business after the second world war, despite his father’s wishes for him to continue his law studies.
Often using the Wallace Heaton film library as a source of films, James was encouraged by the librarian Les Francis to make films himself.
As a result the first Walton travel film “Glimpses of Switzerland” saw the light of day. In the January 1949
issue of the movie magazine Amateur Cine World there appears probably the first advertisement for Walton Films –
along with “Glimpses of Switzerland” are listed “Sam’s Garden Railway” and a new title “The Azure Coast of Southern France” –
“colour and sound versions ready soon”.
A series of “Burhill” 100 foot / 30 metre shorts are also mentioned –
the name probably coming from the local area, as he was trading from his home address of Longmynd, Burwood Park, Walton-on-Thames.
These first releases were only in the 16mm format. By February 1949, 8mm versions had been added to the advertisemnt,
whilst 9.5mm versions had to wait maybe a year or two until Pathéscope
had modified their equipment to use 16mm as well as 35mm master material to producee their well known 9.5mm ‘triple prints’.
